Frequently Asked Questions

Plain-English answers about the current status, Article 5, and the signals that would change our homepage answer.

Are we at war with Russia?

No. There is no formal state of war between NATO members and Russia as of the date shown on our homepage.

What would trigger Article 5?

An armed attack on an Ally, followed by a political decision by NATO members to treat it as an Article 5 case and respond collectively. Each Ally determines the measures it will take.

Does an airspace violation equal war?

Not automatically. Such events are serious and monitored closely, but they do not, by themselves, constitute a declaration of war or an Article 5 situation.

Has Article 5 ever been invoked?

Yes. It has been invoked only once, after the September 11, 2001 attacks on the United States.

How often is the site updated?

We review official sources and credible reporting regularly. If a material change occurs, we update the homepage and note it in the update log.
